When I stopped by the closest grocery store to get our final lunch, I snapped some pictures. It was not hard to eat in Japan -- there is food everywhere, and even food from the combini (eg. 7-11) is quite good. Can you imagine buying sushi at the 7-11 in the US? Lots of prepared items, and full bentos (box meal). Note the huge variety of mushrooms available in a small store, maybe the size of our living room and dining room. If you look at the prices, basically 100 yen is a dollar, or 50 cents for a spear of asparagus. Zucchini was $2 for one medium sized spear. In your bento, you might get 1/2 of a green bean and 1/16 of a carrot.
Fresh food -- fruits and vegetables -- are expensive. When we ate, we often supplemented the prepared/packaged food with carrots, cucumber, and maybe an apple. These were the least expensive among the fruits/vegetables. "Onsen tamago" is an egg that is a bit like a soft-boiled egg, sold cold with a bit of clear sauce. I will miss that. I will not particularly miss "natto" -- stringy like melted mozzarella, but smells like dirty socks. Vegan -- made from soy beans. I eat it sometimes, but really do not need to go out of my way for it!
