Maybe no one really wants to buy lacquerware bowls anymore....

Kyoto craft week took us to learn about lacquer.

We learned how to collect lacquer from the tree,  process it into lacquer, and paint it on wood, or bamboo, or gourds.  We also learned how to use lacquer and gold leaf to repair broken pottery.  This is such a popular thing these days, that people break the pottery on purpose to stick it back together artistically.

But this traditional company needed to figure out new options.  So they lacquered a car a few years back -- and the car still seems to be fine.  More routinely, the make lacquer fingernails.  And lacquer socket wrenches as a corporate gift.  And lacquerware art.
