You don't need to go to the Moss Temple to see moss.

In fact, I have tiny moss gardens right here!
Kozanji Temple is a UNESCO world Heritage site up in the mountains a bit outside of Kyoto (available by bus).  It was founded in 774, and is famous for these animal characters.  Only replicas were on display, but they have secure storage for many paper treasures.
 There is plenty of moss at Kozanji!  Pretty even in the rain.

 This place if famous for starting growing tea for ordinary people -- tea had been used by people of rank, but at this temple they began more widespread cultivation. The city of Uji is a major tea growing center, and they give thanks at this Temple each year.  So this is what ordinary tea looks like:
