Sometimes Okanomiyaki is referred to as Japanese pizza. I think that is because it comes out flat and round, and you can choose your ingredients. A batter with cabbage and perhaps pork or squid is fried like a pancake. We even make it at home sometimes. It is brushed with a dark sauce, sprinkled with crumbled seaweed, and sprinkled with shaved dried tuna (bonito). The same griddle can make a noodle dish, yakisoba, or even a modern okanomiyaki that has noodles in it.
Then there is actual Japanese pizza, complete with corn, a usual ingredient.
